The analysis of imagery

Warrior depicted on golden ring,
Grave Circle A.
(From I Augi tis Ellinikis Tehnis)
The analysis of imagery introduced in the MHIII period will attempt to explore the significance of the appearance of figurative art in the hitherto uniconic MH culture. The emphasis is on the differences in the portrayal of men and women and their positioning in the natural world.

By examining both the internal logic of images and placing them within their (funerary) context (i.e. their associations with other objects and images, or the associations between people and objects), an attempt is made to elucidate the social strategies, gender identities and cultural norms that underlie the representation of the human figure.

This analysis is undertaken by Sofia Voutsaki.
